Counselling Skills and Theory (Intensive Day) CACHE Level 3 Award

Gain the advanced skills and counselling theory needed for your work, or the next step in becoming a counsellor.

This course is for students who have completed Counselling Certificate NCFE Levels 1 and 2 or equivalent qualifications.

With an increasing demand for knowledge of counselling skills and theory in all walks of life, this course provides an ideal knowledge base for progressing in the field of counselling.

You will have completed Levels 1/2 (or an equivalent counselling skills course, minimum of 70 taught hours) and will be able to continue that qualification with this more detailed theoretical and skills based course.

The counselling certificate courses are part of the foundation counselling certificate training at Guildford College, comprising NCFE Level 1 to level 3 certificate courses.

If you have no previous experience in counselling training, but have an interest in counselling or want to use counselling skills and theory in your work, these courses can be an appropriate starting place for you if you wish to progress to a Counselling Diploma or Foundation Degree.

The course provides advanced skills and counselling theory for use in work or the next step in training to become a counsellor and is Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) approved.

Development of counselling skills is combined with an exploration of three major theoretical models:

  • humanistic
  • psychodynamic
  • cognitive behavioural

These form the core structure of the course. A deepening personal awareness is encouraged throughout the course and we will also cover professional issues, including legal aspects of counselling, equal opportunities, grief and bereavement issues.

You will learn via a combinatioin of:

  • mini lectures
  • skills training
  • experiential activities in small and large groups
  • discussion
  • assignments requiring personal reflection

Weekly assignments varying throughout the duration of the course. Between five–seven hours per week.

Upon graduating from this course, you could go onto courses such as a Counselling Foundation Degree at one of our colleges, or move onto a Level 4 Diploma or other university degree.

You must have undertaken and proficiently passed a counselling skills training course. For example, our Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills or an equivalent qualification of at least 75 Guided Learning Hours from another institution.

This can be verified by providing a Level 2 Certificate from a reputable training institution that abides by the Ethical Framework and guidelines set out by a recognised counselling association such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and a portfolio of work.

A copy of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework for Good Practice is required.
