This two-year qualification will prepare you for work in health or care-related careers in a professional capacity.
Topics covered on this course include: working in health and social care environments, awareness of protection and safeguarding, development across all ages, and more.
The course provides opportunities for direct entry into the industry or professional training courses at university. Some of the health-related degrees/courses you could progress onto are:
- all branches of nursing
- midwifery
- occupational therapy
- podiatry
- ambulance services/paramedic science
- radiography
This programme also provides entry to university courses in youth work or social work, or directly into employment in many areas of health and social care.
For nursing and some other health-related degree courses, university fees may not be chargeable.
This course presents the opportunity to develop practical and professional skills in health and/or social care settings through a planned series of relevant work placements, chosen to complement student’s career interests. Progression is possible to higher education to study degree courses in nursing, other health related or social care disciplines.

Progression
The Extended Diploma will allow you to progress on to university to study degrees in: nursing, operating department practice, paramedic sciences, radiography, occupational therapy, podiatry, sociology, psychology, counselling, social work and many more.
It is also an excellent foundation for direct employment in health and social care settings in which further qualifications can be gained in the workplace.
Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English language and maths.
Additional information
Work placements are an integral part of the programme and in addition to enhancing the student’s learning experience in health and care, provide evidence of subject knowledge for employment or HE application.
