Poppy, Art and Design Level 3 UAL Extended Diploma

Poppy, an Art and Design Level 3 UAL Extended Diploma student, was inspired to enrol at City of Oxford College for its unique fashion specialism option.

College was a very new and exciting environment for Poppy, who had been home schooled and had just finished her GCSEs before joining.

When asked what appealed to her about coming to City of Oxford College, Poppy said:

“I really liked the facilities. The course looked really great and it is one of the only places in the area that actually offered a fashion course.”

Poppy’s visual arts programme allowed her to study art and design in full and later choose a specialism in her final year, with Poppy choosing fashion.

“I really like the fact that the course wasn’t just fashion, it was very explorative. You could do the other specialisms as well.”

Poppy has high regard for her programme, the facilities available at City of Oxford College and the level of teaching she has received.

“I really enjoy the course; they are always updating facilities and the teachers here are really supportive, friendly and well trained in their areas. I just like the way you are able to explore everything so you can really find out which areas you are interested in within the course.”

Poppy has had the opportunity to participate in college trips and masterclasses with a trip to Venice being a highlight since joining on the programme.

“I actually went to Venice earlier this year. We went to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and other museums as well. This was to support research for our final major project.”

Poppy’s final major project focuses on menstruation and the restrictions of women in society, about which she commented, “I am actually tackling a really taboo topic.”

When preparing to apply for university, Poppy felt informed and supported throughout the application process.

“Activate Learning have been really supportive, they have careers advisors onsite and we’ve had talks with them, as well as one-to-ones with tutors. I think my confidence has definitely improved on this course and I feel prepared for university now.”

Now In the final year of her programme, Poppy has applied to university to study costume design and making.

“I think it was an advantage doing this course compared to people doing A Levels for my chosen course at university. You are doing it all the time and get to explore the specialisms further.”

When asked would she recommend her course at Activate Learning, Poppy said:

“I’d say it’s a really brilliant course and the college offers everything that you need. There’s always support on hand from people if you need it. I would definitely recommend an Activate Learning college; City of Oxford College has offered me a great place to study. It is really accessible as it is in the city centre and offers good transport links which are easy to get to!”
