Sean, Foundation Degree in Furniture: Design and Make

Sean Evelegh is a student at the prestigious Rycotewood facility at City of Oxford College, studying a Foundation Degree in Furniture: Design and Make.

Sean has been woodworking for over eight years, working on projects at college and his own workshop at home, where he started his own YouTube channel, filming his own personal projects.

As a member of the woodworking community, Sean had been hearing good things about the programmes at Rycotewood and therefore, when it came to looking at continuing his studies after college, he made the five-hour journey to Oxford from his home to come to an Open Event to meet the teachers and current students. He was impressed with the facilities and said that, “a big selling point for Rycotewood was that it offered accommodation and the programme was really practical and less focused on furniture design. I’m a practical learner, so Rycotewood was the best choice for me.”

Currently, Sean is focused on completing his studies at Rycotewood while continuing to grow his YouTube channel. Projects that he works on at the college now also form the basis for some of the content he is producing.

A recent assignment he has been set on his Furniture programme is to make a piece inspired by the city of Oxford. Sean opted to build a console table with turned legs and curved rails. The rails are inspired by the bridges of Oxford and have a brick-effect pattern.

Creativity such as this is really encouraged on the programme and fostered by the learning environment. Regarding this, Sean says that, “It’s great to have a workbench right next to other students so we can always bounce ideas off one another. One of the best things about studying here is the free time, where we are able to use the facilities to experiment.”

Sean echoes the sentiments of his peers when he says that the tutors are supportive and helpful. This support is available throughout the course and will develop into a focus on helping students such as Sean develop the commercial viability of their own work and setting up on their own, which is something that Sean has expressed an interest in.
